Ken Abrames is a fly tier, writer, and philosopher of the surf, and the Flatwing is his thesis statement. Saddle hackles are tied on the flat plane rather than surrounding the hook, creating a fly that breathes and undulates in the current with the organic movement of something genuinely alive. It is not the easiest fly to tie or fish, but the anglers who fish it do so with a conviction that borders on the religious. When a big striper turns on a Flatwing in the wash, you understand why.
