The Snake Fly is proof that in fly tying, as in writing, the first draft should be cut in half. One saddle hackle, wrapped on a long-shank hook. That is the entire recipe. And yet, when you strip it through the rips at Cuttyhunk or the surf at Race Point, it becomes a sand eel so convincing that stripers eat it with the urgency of someone who just remembered they skipped breakfast.
