Mike Schmidt designed the Autumn Splendor to exploit this transformation -- burnt orange, gold, and brown materials create the silhouette of a competing spawner or a sculpin trespassing on sacred ground. Swung through fall runs, this fly triggers a response that has less to do with hunger and more to do with territory. The brown trout does not eat it because it is hungry. It eats it because it is angry. You are fishing with rage as bait.
