Lee Wulff designed flies for rough water and big fish, which makes the Royal Wulff practically Alaskan by temperament. The white wings are visible in turbulent water from twenty feet away, and the peacock-and-red body triggers something primal in grayling and trout that no entomologist has been able to explain. It does not imitate any specific insect. It imitates all of them, or possibly none of them. The fish eat it regardless, which is the only data point that matters.
