An alevin is a baby salmon that still has its lunch money attached -- the orange yolk sac that sustains it for the first days of life. Trout and char eat them with the casual cruelty of nature, hovering over gravel beds and picking off the defenseless hatchlings like they are hors d'oeuvres at a cocktail party. This tiny fly imitates that brief, doomed stage of life with unsettling accuracy.
