The Battenkill is where New England fly fishing became a religion, and the Adams is its hymnal. Vermont trout have been refusing poorly presented dry flies since before the American Revolution, and the fish in the Battenkill carry on this tradition with a stubbornness that would make a Vermonter proud. This Adams variant is tied slightly sparser for the gin-clear water that makes the Battenkill both famous and infuriating. The mixed grizzly and brown hackle creates a silhouette that suggests every mayfly hatching without committing to any of them, which in these educated waters is exactly the ambiguity you need. Fish it on a September afternoon with the leaves turning and you will understand why Orvis put their headquarters here.
